What is Diversification?

Spreading holdings across assets with different characteristics so that the failure of one does not shake the whole portfolio. Simply adding more instruments is not diversification; holding several assets that react to the same factor means they fall together in a crisis. It is judged not by count but by looking at weights, volatility, and correlations between assets together.
