What is PER?

Advanced

PER

The share price divided by earnings per share, indicating how many years of current earnings are being paid for. The normal range differs by industry, so comparing across different industries leads to wrong conclusions. Its limitations are that the value jumps when earnings dip temporarily and that it cannot be calculated when the company has a loss.
