What is S&P 500?

Basics

S&P500

An index made up of 500 leading US companies. It is widely used as the benchmark for the US stock market as a whole and as a yardstick for comparing the performance of other strategies. Because it is market-cap weighted, there are periods when a handful of top companies drive the whole index.
